This is probably for a certain age demographic, but I need some linguistic/language/idiom help. When I was a kid playing a team game outside, we used to do a thing where everyone would put their feet or fists in a circle, and someone would recite a little rhyme while tapping a finger on the foot or fist in the circle.
I remember "Engine, engine number nine...," "Bubble gum, bubble in a dish...," and "Catch a tiger by his toe."
Two things: 1. What the hell is the term/phrase/word for those?
A good query for either of NPR’s “A Way with Words” or “Word Matters” productions.
