For me, this song is forever associated with the TV show My So-Called Life. Ricky dancing to it is the physical expression of the sincerity of this song. He just lets go and moves. It’s one of my top most beautiful moments in TV history.
Great write-up. Proving my living-under-a-rock bona fides, I heard the song for the first time last year, and I thought it was great.
You might enjoy Todd In The Shadows discussion of the song. Much of it overlaps with material you've covered in your post, but it's a fun episode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T4tmTKHo8J4
I love this and yes I am absolutely dancing to the song in my head. I feel like it is somehow underrated despite the fact that it was #1 in those 13 sovereign nations.
I still have my cassette single. I unironically love this song.
I shoulda known.
Damn. You killed this. I love it. Now I *HAVE* to listen- and want to.
